Meet the man wearing an Elmo costume who ran against David Cameron
The man behind the mask is Bobby Smyth, who set up the ‘Give Me Back Elmo’ Party in an attempt to get greater custody of his children.
He adopted the Elmo persona as the furry red puppet is a pet name he has for his children. He ran for the seat under the banner: ‘Stop emotional child abuse, Vote Elmo’.
Some of Elmo’s/Mr Smyth’s policies include giving fathers and automatic right to 50/50 shared parenting, twinning Witney with Houston, Texas and introducing a bill that ensures all Family Law solicitors earn no more than £7/€9.60 an hour.
However, the votes just didn’t go Mr Smyth’s way, as he received only 37 votes. Conservative Leader David Cameron amassed 35,201 votes, securing him his seat.
